Description
Angostura bitters, developed in 1824 by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German doctor, was created in the Venezuelan city of Angostura, now known as Ciudad Bolivar. Siegert set up a hospital on the orders of Simon Bolivar, the South American freedom fighter, and initially developed the tonic as a treatment for tropical diseases.
Over time, however, it gained popularity as a condiment and is now a key ingredient in the preparation of classic cocktails.
An indispensable classic in every cocktail bar is Angostura Aromatic Bitter, which has been produced according to an unchanged and top-secret recipe since 1824. As the world’s best-known bitter, exported to over 150 countries, Angostura Aromatic Bitter surpasses its competitors in terms of recognition and popularity. Despite its name, it is surprisingly less bitter and is characterized by a complex taste – from tart and spicy to floral, fruity and slightly sweet notes.
