Production method As required in Montalcino to be Brunello the wine must be 100% Sangiovese Grosso, a clone of Sangiovese that is particularly thick skinned and powerful, besides regular red wine production methods the wine must be aged a minimum of 2 years in barrel before bottling. 24 months is a long time so they tend to use larger barrels so as not to overwhelm the wine with wood and over oxidize it.
In this case 80% of the wine is aged in 600-900 liter “botti” the name for these large casks and 20% is aged in 350 liter French oak “barrique” which is a stretch since standard Bordeaux or Burgundy barriques are only about 225 liters. This is a muscular and very age worthy wine. And this is a great candidate for a long sleep in your cellar.
