Description
The Gutedel grape, also known as Chasselas, is a local specialty in Germany, Switzerland and Alsace. Its home turf in Germany is the tiny sub-region of Markgraflerland located within Baden, Germany’s warmest growing region. It sits at the edge of the Black Forest which protects the area from inclement weather.
This is a fresh gentle wine perfect for refreshing quaffing and light fare light salads and white fish but enough stuffing to pair with fondues and bolder cheeses.
I would like to spread my unsubstantiated theory that the Gudetel grap is a relative of Godello in Spain. The flavor profile is right consistent with Gudetel being planted in a warmer Spanish climate. Also the name bears a resemblance and finally the opportunity was there with the migration of Celtic tribes from northern Europe migrating to Galicia, particularly Valdeorras. The Celt influence is evident thoughout northwest Spain to this day.
