The intensity of the small berries- and excellent juice-to-skin ratios- reminded us of the profundity of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, where our Leviathan is truly at home. Leagues above on the water’s surface, we were able to work the lines, set the sails, and ultimately capture the potential of this epic vintage. The result of our enological voyage is a wine as American as baseball, and as Yogi Berra would have said, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” Find yourself with steady legs in port, and a bountiful glass brimming with aromatics of cigar box, brambly fruit and cacao. The palate gives way to an even-keeled expression of cherries, violets, umeboshi, savory tannins and licorice. In no time, you will be waxing sailor lore with the best of them! And reaching for more, hand over fist!

Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah brought up in 25% new French oak, the 2017 California Red Wine sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as a rich, powerful, opulent style that certainly puts a smile on your face. Notes of currants, chocolate, spice box, and earthy, herbal notes all emerge from this sexy, seamless effort that has full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and outstanding finish. It’s a smoking value to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.

Surprisingly, the 2022 Leviathan Red Wine may outshine the 2021 vintage. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Sirah, 6% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot, it’s loaded with black cherries and cassis. Still not overly complex, it’s a big, full-bodied and crowd-pleasing red wine that proves you don’t need to have residual sugar or use Mega Purple to fill this niche. Velvety textured, fruit forward and long on the finish, it’s a fun, easy-drinking wine at a regular-person price.

Delivers a mouthful of plump, up-front fruit in the form of dark plum and blackberry, along with a hefty dose of roasted vanilla and cocoa that lingers longer on the finish as the fruit loses some steam. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2026. 24,000 cases made.
