About Lopez de Heredia

The story began in the mid-nineteenth century when French négociants, seeking alternative sources of high-quality grapes after the devastating phylloxera epidemic ravaged their vineyards, ventured into the Rioja region. Our founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a passionate and knowledgeable student of winemaking, was inspired by their journey and closely followed their path.

Don Rafael quickly fell in love with the Rioja region, particularly the area around Haro, the legendary capital of Rioja Alta. He recognized a unique synergy of soil and climate, creating the ideal conditions for producing wines that would one day gain global recognition. Around 1877, he began designing and building what would later become the López de Heredia winery, now the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in Rioja.

For over a century, our connection to this land and its harvest has been grounded in deep love and unwavering passion. We hold our heritage in the highest regard, and the combination of this love and our commitment to rigorous quality standards has become our signature—one that guides us today and into the future.

Bodegas López de Heredia stands as one of the few family-owned bodegas recognized by the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja (DOC), the regulatory body of the region.

95 Points Tim Atkins, Rioja Report
“Achieving such a remarkable red wine in the rain-affected 2013 vintage is a true accomplishment. This Tempranillo-based wine, with 20% Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, comes from the 58-year-old ‘El Bosque’ vineyard, situated on clay and limestone soils in Haro. It’s the most Pinot Noir-like of López de Heredia’s reds, with vibrant flavors of raspberry, red cherry, and summer pudding, all balanced by a textured finish. Drink 2024-2030.”
Tim Atkin, 2024 Rioja Report

93+ Points Wine Abvocate “Even in the cooler, rainier 2013 vintage, the Viña Bosconia Reserva remains impressively round with a solid 13.5% alcohol. The winemakers shared that they may have used up to 15% wine from another vintage, possibly from 2015, to ensure consistency. Aged for five years in barrels, it was bottled unfiltered but fined with egg whites. The result is an expressive, elegant wine—clean, complex, and subtle, with polished tannins and excellent acidity (pH 3.3 and 6.7 grams of tartaric acid per liter). 70,000 bottles produced, bottled in May 2021.”
