About Lopez de Heredia
Don Raphael Lopez de Heredia founded this winery in 1877 and four generations later his great granddaughters. own and run this venerable and ultra traditional rioja house. They won’t change a thing and good for them. They only produce from their own vineyards and hold back their wines 5-10 years after the vineyard. Their curent vintage of all their reds and whites are over 10 years old. they produce 4 reds one each from the Cubillo, Bosconia, Tondonia, and Zaconia vineyards. Even their whites receive prolonged aging before and after bottling and show lots of the secondary and tertiary flavors of old style Rioja. Their wines also age incredibly well.

“It could easily be a Gran Reserva,” says María José López de Heredia about this wine, which is traditionally labeled as a Crianza, partly for historical reasons. Harvested late in a cooler vintage, it combines Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo. Earthy and stemmy yet refreshing, it features minimal oak influence, with vibrant redcurrant and pomegranate fruit, and savory tannins. Drink 2024-2029.”

“The 2016 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza is a pleasant surprise—spectacular, elegant, clean, and fresh like few vintages before it. A superb year, it offers quality, quantity, and freshness, standing in stark contrast to the warmer and riper 2015 vintage. Though the alcohol levels are similar, the 2016 feels less ripe, with moderate alcohol and a primary character. Mercedes noted that Cubillas, a 24-hectare vineyard, has the potential for Gran Reserva wines, but they keep it in the Crianza range for balance. This vintage even poses a challenge for Viña Tondonia reds due to its value. While it doesn’t have the same finesse as Tondonia, it’s still a fantastic wine and an excellent bargain. 92,000 bottles produced, bottled in November 2022.”
