This young wine is showing its wood aging strongly. Happily, the fruit is also very present, giving juicy, ripe cherry flavors and a soft texture with a dry core. The wine, from a walled clos once owned by the kings of France, will need to age. Drink from 2021.

The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy offers up an attractive bouquet of fried flowers and crunchy wild berries that’s marked by 30% whole cluster vinification. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and succulent, but firm tannins clamp down on the somewhat drying finish.
