Description
Aged in large oak casks 40 years. Cask aging has lent the wine a softened mellow texture with an intense complex nose which complements the appealing raisiny fruit.

This percolates with rustic energy, as buried acidity keeps the mix of orange peel, date, golden raisin, alder and dried fig notes moving along. Intense and remarkably fresh through the finish, showing an echo of candied walnut. Drink now. 50 cases made, 20 cases imported.

The NV 40 Years Old Tawny Port Porto Menéres is a field blend bottled in 2016 with a bar-top cork and 128 grams of residual sugar. The price applies to a half bottle. I’m a fan of old and complex tawnies, but if you’re not, the 20 or 10 this issue will fill the bill better for you. In the meanwhile, this adds some molasses to the caramel-nuanced 20, but not much more concentration or power. The spirits may be a little more obvious too, but that is not a notable issue. Overall, it is rather elegant for the age, emphasizing its complexity rather than thickness or power. I liked it a lot, but it is a little unassuming for a 40. It is still the best of the three submissions this issue.
