Description
About the winery Mer Soleil is one of the many wine endeavors of the 5 generations of Wagners producing wine in northern California. Chuck Wagner was best know as founder of Caymus Cab from Napa. One of their other wineries was Mer Soleil, literally “sea and sun” begun in Monterey and producing great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Chuck’s son Charlie Wagner began working at the winery at 16 and has become the winemaker since then. They’ve branched into the Santa Lucia Highlands area, also prime for Chardonnay and Pinot. One interesting development is the meyer lemon orchards they’ve planted in this frost free zone where citrus can succeed. They swear that since then a light scent of lemon blossoms has crept into the Chardonnay from the nearby orchards!
About the wine: Sourced from Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) about an hour south of Monterey bay with perfect conditions for top quality Chardonnay
grapes.
Production methods This reserve wine is aged 11 months in French oak, partial Malolactic and partial non malo to capture both rich creaminess and vibrant acidity.
Tasting notes “Soft gold color. Richly perfumed nose, with light notes of honeysuckle, truffle and buttery oak. Full, layered flavors of tropical fruit are balanced by a bright acidity of sweet citrus, and linger though the long, creamy finish.” -The Winery
Pairings Charlie Wagner suggests pairing it pan seared Chilean sea bass, crab cakes or fettuccini Alfredo.
