Description
90 rating Wine Advocate
“The Riesling The Knoll – Lahoma Vineyards is from Seneca Lake. It comes in with three grams of residual sugar… and 12.8% alcohol. It was aged in a 70/30 blend of stainless steel and fifth-use French oak. Winemaker Kelby Russell says that, like the Dry Riesling, this was an outlier in 2018 that “hung cleanly into late October,” perhaps aided along by dropping 50% of the fruit in the big 2017 vintage. The result, in any event, is very fine. On first tastes, this seems open and inviting, but the hammer comes down fast. There’s plenty of power here, with some notable tension on the finish… it is quite elegant. It has upto 10 years of aging potential. There were 306 cases produced.”
Debra and David Whiting founded Red Newt Cellars in 1998 and Debra opened the Red Newt Bistro alongside. The first wine releases were in June of 1999.
Today, the Red Newt Cellars winery and Bistro are located in the small town of Hector in the Finger Lakes region of New York, on the southeastern corner of Seneca Lake. At 600 meters below sea level, Seneca Lake is the deepest of the Finger Lakes and one of the deepest lakes in the United States. The effects of the lake and the resulting range of surrounding altitudes and soil types create a wide array of unique terroirs in a relatively small area.
